🌊 Main Warning: Beware of High Waves
Although the weather on land has calmed down, the sea remains very rough. The Funchal Port Authority has extended the high surf warning until Monday morning (Dec 22, 06:00).
- Who is affected: All tourists near the coastline.
- What this means in practice: On the north coast and the island of Porto Santo, waves can reach heights of 4 to 5 meters. On the south coast, including Funchal, waves are expected to be up to 3.5 meters.
- Our recommendation: Strictly avoid entering piers, breakwaters, and unprotected coastal promenades. Swimming on the north coast is extremely dangerous today. This also applies to the natural pools in Porto Moniz and Seixal, which can be unexpectedly flooded by large waves.
🚗 Transportation: Airport Normal, Roads Slippery
The good news is that operations at Cristiano Ronaldo Airport have returned to normal after last week’s disruptions. However, increased caution is required on the roads.
- Who is affected: Air travelers and drivers.
- What this means in practice: Flights are arriving and departing on schedule. However, after morning showers, roads are slippery, especially in the mountains and on the Via Rápida expressway. Several accidents have been reported. In the center of Funchal, there may be temporary road closures due to a fire department response to a minor fire.
- Our recommendation: If you are flying today, the situation is stable, but check your flight status online just in case. If you are driving, slow down and exercise extra caution. In Funchal, be patient and follow police instructions.
🥾 Trails and Hiking: Where to Go Today?
Today’s weather is more suitable for city sightseeing and excursions at lower altitudes. Expect overcast skies and light showers in the mountains and in the north.
- Who is affected: Hikers planning trips and levada walks.
- What this means in practice: Trails on the northern levadas and in mountainous areas like Rabacal are likely to be muddy and slippery. Visibility at higher elevations may be reduced due to clouds.
- Our recommendation: It’s best to skip high-altitude hikes today, such as the trek between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo. If you still decide to walk a levada in the north, be sure to have waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear. The ideal choices for today are walks in Funchal, visiting the botanical gardens, or shorter trails on the sunnier south side of the island.
🎄 Culture in Funchal: A Great Plan B
If the weather has spoiled your plans, Funchal offers a great program indoors, complete with a wonderful Christmas atmosphere.
- Who it’s for: Anyone looking for an alternative to outdoor activities.
- What this means in practice: The city is bustling with Christmas preparations and offers various cultural events.
- Our recommendation: Stroll through the city center and discover the traditional Madeiran nativity scenes, known as “lapinhas,” which are often displayed in shop windows and churches. The Christmas markets and lights on Avenida Arriaga are in full swing. If you enjoy music, a Jazz Festival event is scheduled for 16:30.
