🌧️ Weather & Flights: Yellow Storm Warning Issued
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning. Worsening conditions, including rain and wind, are expected to hit the island just as New Year’s Eve preparations and celebrations are underway.
- Who is affected: All tourists heading to outdoor viewpoints and air travelers (especially those flying with TAP).
- What this means in practice: You risk getting soaked while waiting for the midnight fireworks. Cristiano Ronaldo Airport may face operational restrictions, leading to a higher risk of flight delays or diversions due to high winds.
- Our recommendation: Pack waterproof clothing and have a plan for rain. If you are flying today or tomorrow, monitor your airline’s app and the airport website (ANA.pt) regularly before you leave for the airport.
🚗 Funchal: Traffic Gridlock and 15,000 Cruise Passengers
The port of Funchal is packed to capacity, with cruise ships that have brought over 15,000 passengers for the famous fireworks display. The situation is complicated by local traffic accidents in the city center (near the La Vie shopping center).
- Who is affected: Drivers and visitors in the capital city.
- What this means in practice: The waterfront (Avenida do Mar) is extremely crowded. Parking in the city center is nearly impossible, and restaurants are full, even at lunchtime. Expect significant traffic jams.
- Our recommendation: Do not drive into the city center. Park on the outskirts and walk, or take a taxi (be prepared for long waits). Avoid the area around the La Vie roundabout.
🥾 Mountains & Levadas: Which Trails Are Closed?
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of hiking trails. WARNING: Some of the most popular routes are not fully accessible.
- 🔴 PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo): PARTIALLY CLOSED. Only the section from the radar station to the “Ninho da Manta” viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km) is open. The path onwards to Pico Ruivo is impassable.
- 🔴 PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: Fully closed.
- 🔴 PR 7 Levada do Moinho: Closed.
- 🔴 PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio): Closed due to a landslide.
- 🟢 PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes: Open (one-way system in place on certain sections).
Editor’s Advice: Given the current weather and partial closure, we strongly advise against attempting the Pico to Pico hike today. The fog and high winds on the ridges pose a significant risk. Instead, consider visiting museums, the Mercado dos Lavradores, or Blandy’s Wine Lodge.
