Today’s Top Story: Beware of Extreme Weather in the Mountains
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a strong warning for today. Rain and, most notably, strong winds with gusts up to 90 km/h (approx. 56 mph) are expected in the mountainous regions. Additionally, there is a risk of snow and ice formation on the highest peaks, such as Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo.
- Who is affected: All tourists, especially those planning to hike.
- What this means in practice: There is a risk of falling branches, slipping on wet and icy trails, and losing your balance in strong winds. Conditions at high altitudes are life-threatening today.
- What we recommend: Completely cancel any plans for high-altitude hikes and treks. Opt for a safer, alternative program at lower elevations or in the cities.
Trail Status and Recommendations for Hikers
Based on the current forecast, we strongly advise against the following routes today:
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): ⛔ DO NOT HIKE. The combination of 90 km/h winds, rain, and possible snow or ice makes this trek extremely hazardous. Access roads to the peaks may be closed.
- Levadas in the northern part of the island: Be extremely cautious. The paths will be slippery, and there is a risk of falling branches or minor landslides. If you still decide to go, choose short, well-sheltered routes at lower altitudes.
- Vereda do Larano (Porto da Cruz): A search and rescue operation for a missing person is underway in this area, which is also experiencing strong winds and high waves. Avoid the cliffs.
Transportation and Practical Information
✈️ Cristiano Ronaldo Airport (FNC)
Strong crosswinds are always a challenge for Madeira’s airport. Although operations are not officially suspended, there may be flight delays or diversions to other airports (typically Porto Santo or the Canary Islands). If you are travelling today, monitor your flight status closely on the airport operator’s website, ana.pt.
🛍️ Shopping in Funchal
December 26th is traditionally “Exchange Day” (Dia de trocas) in Madeira, when locals head to the shops to return or exchange unwanted Christmas gifts. Expect larger crowds in shopping centres like La Vie or Madeira Shopping, as well as more difficult parking.
🌊 Sea and Coastline
Heavy surf is expected, especially on the north coast (in areas like Seixal, São Vicente, and Porto Moniz). Swimming here today is life-threatening. On the south coast, also be cautious when walking on piers and breakwaters, as there is a risk of being swept away by an unexpected wave.
Tip for an Alternative Itinerary Today
The adverse weather provides a perfect opportunity to explore Funchal’s indoor attractions:
- Visit museums (CR7 Museum, Madeira Story Centre, Whale Museum in Caniçal).
- Go for a Madeira wine tasting at Blandy’s Wine Lodge.
- Explore the caves in São Vicente (but check if they are open before you go, as they may be temporarily closed due to the rain).
- Enjoy a stroll through downtown Funchal and admire the Christmas lights, which are still on display along Avenida Arriaga.
