⚠️ Mountains and Hiking Trails: All Closed

The most important news for anyone planning outdoor trips today: The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has closed all official hiking trails (PR) on the island with immediate effect.

What does this mean in practice?

  • Entry Prohibited: This doesn’t just apply to the high-altitude ridge walk from Pico do Areeiro, but also to popular levadas (Rabaçal, Caldeirão Verde) and coastal treks (Ponta de São Lourenço).
  • Risks: There is zero visibility in the mountains, along with extreme rainfall and strong winds. There is a danger of falling branches, trees, and landslides.
  • Recommendation: Avoid the mountains completely today. The ban is in effect until at least 12:00 PM, but given the forecast, we expect it to last all day. Do not take risks, even if the weather in Funchal seems to calm down for a moment.

🌊 Coast and Swimming: Red Flag

Storm Francis has raised sea levels and brought dangerous high surf, affecting the southern coast as well.

Impact on Recreation

  • Swimming Complexes Closed: The Frente Mar Funchal company has closed all its complexes (Lido, Ponta Gorda, and others). Entering the water is prohibited.
  • Safety on Promenades: Stay away from breakwaters and piers. The waves can be unpredictable, and there is a risk of being swept into the sea.

✈️ Transportation: Airport and Ferries

Strong winds, with gusts exceeding 100 km/h in the east of the island (Caniçal, Santa Cruz), are complicating air and sea travel.

  • Air Travel: Several flights (including TAP connections) have already been diverted back to Lisbon or canceled. If you are traveling today, check your flight status online before heading to the airport.
  • Porto Santo: The Binter flight connection has been canceled, and the Porto Santo Line ferry is also reporting problems. A trip to the neighboring island is not possible today.

💡 What to Do Today? Alternative Plans

Even though the weather is not suitable for outdoor activities, Madeira offers great options for spending the day indoors.

  • Museums in Funchal: It’s the perfect time to visit the CR7 Museum, the Madeira Story Centre, or the interactive 3D Fun Art Museum.
  • Wine Tasting: The historic Blandy’s Wine Lodge offers tours and tastings where you can stay out of the rain.
  • Gastronomy: Use the day for a long lunch and try an espetada at one of the traditional restaurants outside the mountain areas.

Good news to end on: The midnight fireworks were successfully launched before the storm arrived, so the New Year’s celebrations went off without a hitch. Dedicate today to rest and safety.
